In Class Writing #7
-          Brief Summary (3 sentences)
A simple video game “Grand Theft Auto” is changing the ways boys think when it comes to killing actual people. This game gives the boys and men who play a chance to see that maybe killing isn’t as bad as people portray. With technology growing and the game seeming to take off the way it as so has many homicides and killings.
-          Briefly Paraphrase (3 sentences)
Beck’s argument is clearly stated when he talks about his video game. He looks through history seeing that people in WW2 were having trouble killing other humans. Now years later many men can shoot someone without much thought when it comes to war. He says now boys can experience what soldiers in WW2 had to go through for only 60 dollars. With technology kids are being exposed to violence and Beck says that the games are to blame for all of the homicides that go on today.  With Grand Theft Auto getting so big so are the numbers of homicides. Beck believes this is crazy and should be stopped.
-          Analysis of the video
Video games are becoming more and more violent for kids. Like Beck said violence in video games are causing kids to think that killing is okay and lets them kill without much hesitation in the game so why not in real life. Violence in video games are becoming a huge concern for the commonwealth of society.

In Class Writing #6

My life with online music has been a very short road. This past summer I started going on Pandora to listen to music that I didn’t own. I loved the fact that I didn’t have to buy the music in order to listen to it, and the best part was that it’s free with some commercials. After I got annoyed with the commercials I heard about Grooveshark. This is an online music player in which you choose the songs that want to play, and the order they play. They’re no commercials and the fact you can choose the song and listen to it in the full was awesome. The best part of it all though, is that it was free.
I know that music piracy exists. Honestly, I have no idea how you would go about stealing music and using it, but I know a lot of people who do. For instance, lime wire is all I heard about throughout my high school years. Also, I know people can download music illegally. It’s a federal offense to download copyrighted material illegally, yet some people do.
Some people think that it’s no big deal whether people steal music or not. Their thoughts are if it’s up there to be stolen then they would take it to steal the music. Also, music composers hate piracy and hate it when their music is stolen. They‘re being scammed every time some pirates their music. Most people who pirate music sell the songs for a profit. Music composers don’t like that at all.
I am not a fan of piracy. I personally think it’s dumb. If you want a CD or even a movie that much go out and buy it, don’t go to get it through illegal means. The difference of paying 12 dollars and stealing the music is well your out of 12 dollars or you go to jail for 5 or more years. Personally, I would rather pay the 12 dollars.

I read "How to Save the Music Business" article. The author is completely against piracy. He believes that it is taking away from the music business' and dragging them into the ground. He most definitely believes in subscriptions. He wants to stop piracy and make people pay for music.

Freeze In Class Writing #5

Katelyn loves her horse to death. She has many pictures on her Facebook of her horse and her riding the horse in shows. She went to Kellam and is now at Virginia Tech. She lives really close to Virginia Beach and loves her horse Dakota more than anything else in the world.  She really enjoys playing sports especially softball and tennis. She also likes hitting the slopes with a snowboard. She loves Disney movies and loves listening to a lot of different types of music. She very much does accomplish selling herself. She sells her real self from what I can tell from talking to her in person and by looking at her profile.
Oh yes the comments on her wall are a lot about horses and about school.  Also, a lot of people post about football. She loves sports so therefore all the posts about the football tickets/ games are very much relevant to her image. Kellie Weisenbeck wrote on Katelyn's wall “In one piece please- and don't broadcast cuz Dakota might hear and trying to keep him sound and worked! Shhhhhh.” Dakota is her horse. Dakota is most definitely her life back home and here at Tech.
The ads on the side are Taylor Swift’s “Speak Now” album, Maybelline New York’s mascara, Maybelline New York’s lip balm, and K-Swiss which is a type of shoe. The album shown was Taylor’s newest released album and it was basically just trying to get girls like Katelyn and me to buy it. Looking through Katelyn’s music she has Taylor Swift under her music interests. I do as well. The image on the advertisement is a picture of Taylor Swift’s album “Speak Now.” It’s very much a girl color and is just the epitome of Taylor and teenage girls.
Also, considering that we are both girls the make-up companies are going to be targeting us. They know that make-up is a hard decision, but the more we see their name, the more we will recognize them at the store. The lip balm had a very catchy image with very interesting words off to the side of the image. The ad was basically providing information and showing that Maybelline officially sells lip balm. Maybelline is well known for their eyeliner and mascara. They aren’t as well-known for their lip balm. Therefore, with a catchy advertisement and bright colors they attract girls to the right of the page. Going along with Maybelline, they also provided an ad about their mascara. The ad was pretty simple just showing the image of their top notch inexpensive product. The ad just shows how many different types of their mascara brand they have. They are appealing to girls logos; by saying they have so many options so just choose the right choice first.
Also, the shoe ad just appeals to Katelyn and me because we both love sports and have a driven passion to do them. Therefore, seeing that we are into sports they advertise a pink shoe to our pathos, knowing it would get our attention and get their name stuck in our head. By appealing to our pathos they know that our hearts are connected with sports which ultimately require some sort of athletic shoe. This is when they bring in the athletic K-Swiss tennis shoe.
All four of these ads were liked by a friend of mine and can be liked by me. The liking provides a sense of reality and basically says, if your friends are using it, so should you. That is what I get out of being able to like advertisements on a Facebook wall. All of these ads make sense as to why they show up on Katelyn’s profile. We are both girls so go figure make-up would create a connection between us, and we both love sports and Taylor Swift. We have many similar interests which makes the advertisements more reasonable for showing up when I looked at her profile. Overall Katelyn seems to be the person she is on Facebook off of Facebook. It’s hard to share everything so I’m sure she doesn’t put all of her faults and bad things about herself on Facebook, but it is very biased. The advertisements on the side all connected to us either in a far out sort of way or because we both had a “like” of the same person.
