Freeze Blog Post #12

Within "The Machine Stops" Forester creates a futuristic world that has a machine that basically does everything for the people who use it. This machine is basically life for people in the future. It helps them in the everyday world. It helps them communicate with one another in a virtual way, it helps them eat, dress. It basically does everything for them. Therefore, they don't need to pick up a finger to do anything. Kuno, the son of Vashti, called his mom up one day through the machine and wanted her to visit him. He is across the world from her so she says no. Her reasoning is that she can talk to him through the machine. The machine is basically the technology we have out today in this time period. Kuno doesn't believe that the machine is good and wants to communicate with him mom in person. His mom is caught up with the machine and denies. We are like Vashti. We don't realize the harm technology is doing to our lives. Kuno has more of a realistic view point and hates the machine. Kuno would most definitely be a person hating technology.
Kuno sees the harm with technology and so therefore he becomes "homeless" in the story. Being "homeless" is living without the machine so basically without technology. For the second production I chose Wall-E. Wall-E is basically responding to how people are becoming more and more lazy with all of the technology advances. It also shows how the humans in the future are so distracted with their little own world within the technology.
The two are very similar in the fact that it's both criticizing technology. Both are showing technology in a bad way that show how humans become incapable of helping themselves. The stories also both have a machine that does everything for them. They can video chat and get dressed all by the machine. The only really big difference that is between the two is that in Wall-E the machine is taking away from life and is distracting the humans from seeing the world around them.
Wall-E is more for the kids and so it does have humor within a huge topic. "The Machine Stops" is a lot heavier and harder to understand, because it is such a weird topic of the future. Wall-E is also a movie while "The Machine Stops" is a short story. Therefore it's easier to understand Wall-E, but "The Machine Stops" has a lot of good ideas about the future and what it could possible look like.
I don't believe that the future is going to become this bad, but there is a possibility. From what I think we are going to be more careful about the future, because we have all of these scary ideas. I think people are going to have implants in their heads which is a very scary thought. I personally don't even know what the future is going to look like, but I hope we aren't as lazy and incapable of communicating with one another on a face to face basis. From these two examples I think they would be more Utopian since everyone seems to be happy except for that one exception. The future is a very scary thought and with all of this new talk about what it's going to look like is even scarier.

Freeze Creative Proposal

My presentation topic is the future in communication. For this topic many ideas come to mind. For instance, making a video of people chatting with each other of course is going to come into play. Even though that’s already around and is known as Skype and many other things video chatting can be developed more to the fact that it’s flawless. Another idea would be to create a hologram sort of looking thing on a movie and show two people talking with one literally in the same room. This is an idea that hasn’t been developed, but maybe creating a futuristic cell phone that can have a hologram or can contain literally everything in a simple little phone. Sort of like a smart phone, but more advanced and more useful to everyday life. Like I said though, that idea isn’t even developed to the full.

I think communication is going to change rapidly. Through social networking with video and a simple phone call communication continues to transform in front of our eyes. I think communication is going to be transformed completely in the future. Maybe we will be able to apparate, or hit a button and be transferred to some place. Or you simply take a picture and you can choose to go to that place by selecting the picture.

I would love to make a movie to show communication in some way or maybe even an audio tape. Or I could show everyday life with communication in a person’s life in the future from transportation to talking to just overall being connected. I would need a laptop, a video camera, props for the video, and maybe an audio recorder along with some help from someone. My plan is to basically start soon and figure out what I want to do first. Then I’m going to progressively do my video in separate sections and not all at once. Then when I go home for Thanksgiving break I’m going to tape all the other components of my video in my house. Lastly, I’m going to edit at my house and then finish in time for November 28th. I’m going to start this project by November 8th, 2011.

Freeze Blog Post #11

Privacy is very important when it comes to everyday life. Everyone has those private thoughts that go through their minds every second of every minute of every day. Those thoughts never leave your mind. Are they private? Yes very much so, no one else knows what you are thinking about. Online privacy is when thoughts and comments online aren’t read by the world and are kept under lock and key. For instance, a blog that only a couple of people read is very private. Another example would be the private Facebook groups that one can make for only a couple of people’s eyes. Some more private things online would be your number or certain comments you make on walls. Anything you put online though has a way of not really being all that private. According to the article “How Facebook is Redefining Privacy” Zuckerburg’s (the founder of Facebook) next goal is to increase the amount of emotions on Facebook. That is not being private on the web. Emotions are very personal and when they are shared to more people than you expected then one would feel their privacy is invaded. Personal privacy is basically thoughts and feelings that you keep within or talk only to a few people. Also, it could literally be locking yourself in your room to be alone with your thoughts.
I share a good amount of stuff from my heart with people, but never things on my mind in person of course. Online though I just say the common things that people share. I share very vague things like my favorite color is blue or I love Harry Potter. Basically the things that people are going to find out eventually so why not just tell them online. On Facebook, I share everything with people except for my number, my email, where I live, and my high school. Everything else I share with all my friends.
After Googling myself I found that my twitter name comes up, and my times for Cross Country, Indoor, and Outdoor Track come up. Am I surprised? No not at all, I knew that my times from racing were going to be posted on the internet and of course I knew my twitter account name was probably going to come up somewhere. I believe that I tend to be a little creepy sometimes, but Spokeo is creepier than me. It knows where I live and who my siblings, and my dad. I’m not okay with all that information being on the internet. Privacy is very important and one main private thing that I don’t want the whole world to know is where I live.

The article is focused solely on Facebook users. I'ts all about how people who sign up for Facebook don't read all the conditions and how Facebook can give your information to third party users. How do I know this? The article only talks about Facebook users and how third parties can easily access your information from your profile. The article is responding to how Facebook can take information from our profile and sell it to third parties outside. Michael Gregoris believes that users should be aware of these third parties and know what they are getting themselves into when they sign-up. Also, he wants users to be careful of the third parties. There is a website used in the article that claims the CIA funded Facebook in some sort of way. He also provides specific numbers of how many people were on Facebook in 2007 which adds to his creditably.
This article contains logos. Who would want to keep their Facebook profile if they knew that third parties are selling their information. Therefore this article got to me enough to delete my Facebook profile. I wasn't about to keep something that was selling my information and tracking my online track.

-          Brief Summary (3 sentences)
A simple video game “Grand Theft Auto” is changing the ways boys think when it comes to killing actual people. This game gives the boys and men who play a chance to see that maybe killing isn’t as bad as people portray. With technology growing and the game seeming to take off the way it as so has many homicides and killings.
-          Briefly Paraphrase (3 sentences)
Beck’s argument is clearly stated when he talks about his video game. He looks through history seeing that people in WW2 were having trouble killing other humans. Now years later many men can shoot someone without much thought when it comes to war. He says now boys can experience what soldiers in WW2 had to go through for only 60 dollars. With technology kids are being exposed to violence and Beck says that the games are to blame for all of the homicides that go on today.  With Grand Theft Auto getting so big so are the numbers of homicides. Beck believes this is crazy and should be stopped.
-          Analysis of the video
Video games are becoming more and more violent for kids. Like Beck said violence in video games are causing kids to think that killing is okay and lets them kill without much hesitation in the game so why not in real life. Violence in video games are becoming a huge concern for the commonwealth of society.

In Class Writing #6

My life with online music has been a very short road. This past summer I started going on Pandora to listen to music that I didn’t own. I loved the fact that I didn’t have to buy the music in order to listen to it, and the best part was that it’s free with some commercials. After I got annoyed with the commercials I heard about Grooveshark. This is an online music player in which you choose the songs that want to play, and the order they play. They’re no commercials and the fact you can choose the song and listen to it in the full was awesome. The best part of it all though, is that it was free.
I know that music piracy exists. Honestly, I have no idea how you would go about stealing music and using it, but I know a lot of people who do. For instance, lime wire is all I heard about throughout my high school years. Also, I know people can download music illegally. It’s a federal offense to download copyrighted material illegally, yet some people do.
Some people think that it’s no big deal whether people steal music or not. Their thoughts are if it’s up there to be stolen then they would take it to steal the music. Also, music composers hate piracy and hate it when their music is stolen. They‘re being scammed every time some pirates their music. Most people who pirate music sell the songs for a profit. Music composers don’t like that at all.
I am not a fan of piracy. I personally think it’s dumb. If you want a CD or even a movie that much go out and buy it, don’t go to get it through illegal means. The difference of paying 12 dollars and stealing the music is well your out of 12 dollars or you go to jail for 5 or more years. Personally, I would rather pay the 12 dollars.

I read "How to Save the Music Business" article. The author is completely against piracy. He believes that it is taking away from the music business' and dragging them into the ground. He most definitely believes in subscriptions. He wants to stop piracy and make people pay for music.

Freeze In Class Writing #5

Katelyn loves her horse to death. She has many pictures on her Facebook of her horse and her riding the horse in shows. She went to Kellam and is now at Virginia Tech. She lives really close to Virginia Beach and loves her horse Dakota more than anything else in the world.  She really enjoys playing sports especially softball and tennis. She also likes hitting the slopes with a snowboard. She loves Disney movies and loves listening to a lot of different types of music. She very much does accomplish selling herself. She sells her real self from what I can tell from talking to her in person and by looking at her profile.
Oh yes the comments on her wall are a lot about horses and about school.  Also, a lot of people post about football. She loves sports so therefore all the posts about the football tickets/ games are very much relevant to her image. Kellie Weisenbeck wrote on Katelyn's wall “In one piece please- and don't broadcast cuz Dakota might hear and trying to keep him sound and worked! Shhhhhh.” Dakota is her horse. Dakota is most definitely her life back home and here at Tech.
The ads on the side are Taylor Swift’s “Speak Now” album, Maybelline New York’s mascara, Maybelline New York’s lip balm, and K-Swiss which is a type of shoe. The album shown was Taylor’s newest released album and it was basically just trying to get girls like Katelyn and me to buy it. Looking through Katelyn’s music she has Taylor Swift under her music interests. I do as well. The image on the advertisement is a picture of Taylor Swift’s album “Speak Now.” It’s very much a girl color and is just the epitome of Taylor and teenage girls.
Also, considering that we are both girls the make-up companies are going to be targeting us. They know that make-up is a hard decision, but the more we see their name, the more we will recognize them at the store. The lip balm had a very catchy image with very interesting words off to the side of the image. The ad was basically providing information and showing that Maybelline officially sells lip balm. Maybelline is well known for their eyeliner and mascara. They aren’t as well-known for their lip balm. Therefore, with a catchy advertisement and bright colors they attract girls to the right of the page. Going along with Maybelline, they also provided an ad about their mascara. The ad was pretty simple just showing the image of their top notch inexpensive product. The ad just shows how many different types of their mascara brand they have. They are appealing to girls logos; by saying they have so many options so just choose the right choice first.
Also, the shoe ad just appeals to Katelyn and me because we both love sports and have a driven passion to do them. Therefore, seeing that we are into sports they advertise a pink shoe to our pathos, knowing it would get our attention and get their name stuck in our head. By appealing to our pathos they know that our hearts are connected with sports which ultimately require some sort of athletic shoe. This is when they bring in the athletic K-Swiss tennis shoe.
All four of these ads were liked by a friend of mine and can be liked by me. The liking provides a sense of reality and basically says, if your friends are using it, so should you. That is what I get out of being able to like advertisements on a Facebook wall. All of these ads make sense as to why they show up on Katelyn’s profile. We are both girls so go figure make-up would create a connection between us, and we both love sports and Taylor Swift. We have many similar interests which makes the advertisements more reasonable for showing up when I looked at her profile. Overall Katelyn seems to be the person she is on Facebook off of Facebook. It’s hard to share everything so I’m sure she doesn’t put all of her faults and bad things about herself on Facebook, but it is very biased. The advertisements on the side all connected to us either in a far out sort of way or because we both had a “like” of the same person.

Freeze Blog Post #5

This article by Christine Rosen brings up many good points that is necessary to share with all social networking fans. Throughout this article Rosen points out how social networking is changing to world as we know it. The way we “social network” is changing relationships along with the view we want others to see. Social networking sites are for all ages according to Rosen. She even points out that there’s a website called “Club Penguin” where little kids can play and communicate with one another. We all know of those parents who want to be “in the loop” so they join Facebook and Twitter. Christine’s main point throughout this whole article is informing everyone on the change of the world and how what used to be certainly isn’t what is now.
Relationships. That one word has many different meanings. According to social networking it’s only a relationship until its “Facebook official.” I believe many people can relate to Rosen’s story about how the relationship status changed from in a relationship to single and everyone knew through the internet instead of the face to face communication. The intended audience would of course be those who use these social networking sites and those who use them only through the means of sole communication. Some people only use Facebook to communicate with people which is very sad. Also, she is addressing those who put information up on their site. She’s informing people that others can indeed see where they live. She is not applying her words to those who don’t use these sites and who aren’t all about technology and limited communication.
Rosen is warning those who use these sites that they aren’t safe. Also, she’s trying to explain that people only put what they want others to see up on their profile. We never get to see the real person until we get to know them in person. Most kids and some adults don’t realize how easy it is for some creeper or a college to get into their profile and see who they are trying to hide. Not to mention, future employers look through profiles to determine if someone is fit for the job or not. Christine is just informing the world that what goes on profiles aren’t surely kept a secret. Also, she’s warning that our world is falling into these social networking sites. These sites say that some people have 1000 friends, but they really. Has the term friend changed its meaning too? According to Rosen it has indeed.
Overall this was a very interesting article to read. Rosen provided great information showing that social networking could possibly be in fact a bad thing if used in a bad way. I agree with her when she says “These virtual networks greatly expand our opportunities to meet others, but they might also result in our valuing less the capacity for genuine connection (Rosen 31).”  Social networking is changing the way we view ourselves and others. I’m very interested to see what happens within the next couple years.

Freeze Blog Post #4

The video is found at-
The video that I found is called "You Will" and it was created in 1993. In these four videos it starts with have you ever and ends with you will. After Tom Siracusa asks “have you ever” he goes on to say things that you are going to be able to do in the future. The video campaign shows images of people doing what Tom is talking about. It makes it look like technology is going to transform and that it was starting to transform then, at that point in time. The imaging is very good for it being back in 1993 where technology had just started to take off. The images shown are very detailed when they come onto the screen. It looks like the technology has already come out.
In the video every image of someone using technology catches my attention. The maker did a good job just trying to create an atmosphere where it actually looks like the future is falling upon us when I watch it. The ad is very well organized. They start the same way and end with saying how AT&T will basically provide for the future.
In the “you will” ads the creator attracts the audience by showing things that are going to happen in the future. Everyone loves hearing about the future and people love seeing what’s going to happen next. This also is a video so the campaign always to actually show what could possibly be in the future; therefore it shows the fact that what AT&T has to say is realistic. The whole point of this video is to show the world what AT&T has to offer and basically to stick with them throughout the next years. Even that will capture an audience, but the visuals used completely add to the campaigns.
Throughout this video ethos, logos and pathos are most definitely shown. This video is showing that people should stick with AT&T while they figure out how to bring the future to the present. It’s logical to choose AT&T because they have the big ideas that may change people’s lives in the near future. Also, the ethos part of this ad would have to be the fact that the creators made it look so real. This ad shares to stand behind AT&T because they know basically what they are doing and have big plans for the future and for the company. Therefore, with the video the company shows that they will be around for all of the new innovations of the future. The company also gets to your emotions a little bit as well. When they show the mom chatting with a baby through a pay phone it reaches to your emotions. You want to be able to stay with AT&T for solely the reason to communicate with your family members.
This ad appeals to a lot of audiences. In the spectrum we have people who aren’t following AT&T and those who are. The people who aren’t are convinced that they should because they are going to be coming out with the future innovations. Also, it appeals to their customers by convincing them to stick with the company and to not leave and go to another company. This ad attracts these two different audiences through simply showing that they will be the top in the future. The campaign shows that AT&T will develop the technology for the future to make life easier and faster.
This ad makes a lot of assumptions about the audience. They for one believe that the audience even knows what they do and what their product is that they are selling. If one never heard of AT&T before then they may not understand the commercial. Also, the ad assumes that the customers understand that it will take a while for the future to come. It’s never specified when the cooler technology will be on the market which is a negative effect of the ad.
Within the ad they’re many places where people could relate to. Like for instance on the beach, on a business trip wanting to talk to you children, in a cram to read a book without a library, and just all the different scenarios that are brought up can all be related to. These are all connected to the advertisement through the fact that the future is upon us and that the technology is going to happen sooner than later. These associations may motivate customers to get connected with AT&T and buy the technology they have out right then and then wait until they release what they promised in the video.
Is commercial was found on YouTube. Originally when it was aired it was a commercial on television. The use of this on a commercial back in 1993 made a huge impact on the way people started looking at AT&T. They were using a technological device to air a commercial about the future technological devices. This was the most effective choice at the time to let people know what AT&T had in store for the world. They could show people through a device that more advanced devices were being formed while they were just sitting there.
